Urology Residency
Welcome to the Urology Residency program at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC). Our program consists of 16 ACGME faculty urologists, a large group of affiliated attending urologists, 15 residents, ancillary and administrative staff, and researchers, all dedicated to providing the best training and health care possible.
The residency at the DMC is focused on producing a well-trained urologist capable of entering private practice or continuing on in a fellowship of their choosing. The curriculum is created on rotations through the DMC hospitals, Trinity health Oakland, and Lakes Surgery center, offering a balanced and board experience of urologic cases including female incontinence, andrology, pediatric and trauma. Robotic surgery has a presence at several of the hospitals with state of the art equipment.
Didactics are intertwined with a busy surgery schedule, including weekly Grand Rounds, monthly Tumor Boards and monthly Journal Club. During the calendar year there are regular programs at the hospitals and state and regional meeting which residents participate including DMC QuESST, MSUCOM Research Day, and MUS Resident Research Day. Finally, there are the national and international meetings: AUA Annual, AUA North Central Section, SUFU, World Congress of Endourology, and others which may fit into the residents’ schedule for presentations and board review. Current policies include support for one major even each year.

Urology Residency Information
Pediatrics: The Department of Pediatric Urology is located at The Children’s Hospital of Michigan at the Detroit Medical Center; it is ranked as the top hospital in the state for pediatric urology care, and among America's best hospitals.
The Department treats infants, toddlers, and teens for urology needs and specializes in the evaluation and management of fetal and birth defects of the urinary tract and genitalia. This includes antenatal hydronephrosis, undescended testis, hernia/hydrocele, hydronephrosis, kidney stones, vesicoureteral reflux, bladder exstrophy, hypospadias, epispadias, voiding dysfunction, disorders of sex development and bedwetting.
Robotics: DMC Urology residents will have access to both the DaVinci Si™ and DaVinci Xi™ robotic systems during training. They will work one on one with faculty to treat a spectrum of urologic conditions robotically including: Urologic Oncology, Complex Urinary Reconstruction, Female Urology and General Urology. Residents will also become proficient in standard laparoscopic/minimally invasive techniques
Oncology: DMC Urology provides comprehensive care to patients across all urologic malignancies.
Residents will be exposed to preoperative diagnosis and counseling by participating in the urology clinic, multidisciplinary tumor boards and diagnostic procedures. They will have the opportunity to train under fellowship trained faculty performing complex cancer operations in both the open and minimally invasive setting.
Reconstructive Urology: We are one of the few centers in the world that is highly specialized in the field of Urologic Trauma and Reconstruction. Our physicians treat many conditions including: urethral stricture, buried penis, Peyronie’s disease, fistulae, ureteral obstruction and others.
Andrology: We have helped over one thousand men overcome erectile dysfunction and other sexual issues, restoring them to the life they wish to live. Common problems that contribute to erectile dysfunction include aging, diabetes, high blood pressure, vascular disease, elevated cholesterol, fatigue, smoking, relationship conflict, depression, other prescription medications, substance abuse, and low testosterone, and neurological problems. At DMC urology we are able to determine the underlying cause of your difficulties, and work with you to determine the best treatment to improve your erections, until your and your partners' sexual satisfaction is restored.
Initially we counsel patients to improve their overall health with lifestyle modifications, improving blood pressure / diabetes control, exercise, smoking cessation, etc. We also make sure that the testosterone level is good, and at the same time we begin treatments, which range from pills to injections. Some patients may require a short surgical procedure to place a penile prosthesis which reliably restores erections when other treatments fail.
Endourology: Endourology is a minimally invasive technique available to treat kidney stones. Stones may be extracted or fragmented using tiny instruments through natural body channels such as the urethra, bladder and ureter. Thin scopes are gently advanced through the natural body channels to identify the kidney stones and carefully remove them, sometimes applying laser energy to break the stone. Most such procedures can be done on an outpatient basis. Common endourology procedures include ureteroscopy, cystoscopy, ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy), and PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy). Endourology cases range from straightforward to complex, and we are well equipped to handle efficiently and safely the most complex endourology cases using the latest technologyOur department has been training residents since 2008. Many of our graduates have gone on to fellowship training, and every resident who desired a fellowship has been matched to one. We are committed to the highest level of training, whether your goal is to be an excellent general urologist, or an excellent fellowship-trained academic Urologist.
We are an ACGME-accredited program, and we participate in the AUA match every year.
Currently, our program is approved for training 3 residents per year for a total of 5 years of urology training (a “five year program”). Our residents spend 6 months of their internship year at Wayne State University –DMC General Surgery Program. but are otherwise affiliated with the Michigan State College of Osteophathic Medicine. Our program accepts both qualified MD and DO applicants.
The Urology Residency Program fosters an environment where research is actively supported and encouraged. Under the leadership of Research Director Dr. Kristina Suson, residents receive continuous guidance and mentorship throughout their research journey. The program also provides a full-time research assistant to assist with projects, along with access to a network of medical writers, biostatisticians, and medical student research volunteers. Residents engage in a diverse range of Quality Improvement (QI) and clinical research projects, with the ultimate goal of submitting their findings to relevant academic conferences or publishing their work in peer-reviewed journals.

How do I apply to do an audition rotation?
Medical students in their 3rd or 4th year that are interested in a rotation in urology at DMC should contact Briana Krysler, our residency program coordinator, at bkrysler@dmc.org. She will provide you with the application and will be able to answer any questions.
How do I apply and what is the deadline for applications?Applications are accepted only through ERAS and the selection process is done through https://www.auanet.org/meetings-and-education/for-residents/urology-and-specialty-matches.
How many students are accepted into the program each year?Each year, three residents are selected to join our program in a field of more than 260 Applicants.
How are applicants selected for an interview?Each application is reviewed by a committee. Applicants selected for interview is based on the applicant’s entire file, highlighting: curriculum vitae (including research in medical school, presentations at local and national meetings, other extracurricular activities and interests), performance in medical school, letters of recommendation, performance on the COMLEX and/or USMLE examination and the personal statement.
Does the department sponsor visas for foreign medical students?Foreign medical graduates must be ECFMG certified and non ECFMG candidates should not apply. If chosen for the residency, we work with the DMC GME office to offer J1 visas, as needed.
As a potential applicant, why should I consider your program?Urology resident education is a top priority for our faculty members and our medical center. Our urology residents have opportunities to gain vital experience in all urologic sub-specialties by working in a collaborative environment with multiple fellowship-trained faculty members who after have received national and internal recognition in their areas of expertise. At the end of residency, our program is confident that you will have the skill set to pursue private practice or a fellowship of your choosing.
Is housing provided for rotating medical students?Unfortunately, the DMC does not offer housing. However, we can provide suggestions.
Is transportation suggested for rotating medical students?Yes, you will need transportation when doing a rotation with our program.
When and where will interviews be held in 2024?We hold our interviews the first two weeks of December. We anticipate the 2025 interviews to be in-person on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 and virtual on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

 | Janae Preece, M.D.Dr. Preece earned her bachelor's degree in political science from Brigham Young University, where she also minored in chemistry. After completion of her undergraduate degree, she moved to Italy where she worked with the underserved medical community and helped with clinical medical research. Upon returning to the U.S., she pursued her medical education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she graduated cum laude. She pursued her internship in general surgery and residency in urology at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.
