Dr. Stanley M. Berry

Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine,
Wayne State University School of Medicine/Hutzel Women’s Hospital

Stanley M. Berry, MD, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal‐Fetal Medicine, joined Wayne Health in 2018, but has been affiliated with Wayne State University and Hutzel Women’s Hospital for the past 35 years. Dr. Berry has special expertise in providing care for women with high‐risk pregnancies.

Dr. Berry chose Wayne Health because it has a group of excellent practicing physicians who are outstanding in their chosen field. He most enjoys interacting with the Metro Detroit patients and exposing medical students, residents and fellows to the hands‐on practice of medicine.

Dr. Berry attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio as well as Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota as an undergrad. He later attended and graduated from the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota. His inner‐city upbringing, extensive pre‐college and college work experience, and the intellectual immersion he received as an undergrad help him relate to a wide variety of patients. In addition, he was active in theatre playing parts in, and directing, several different productions. This experience helps him achieve a comfort level with patients and their families that he may not have developed as quickly. Dr. Berry completed a Maternal‐Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Wayne State University School of Medicine/Hutzel Women’s Hospital under the direction of Sidney F. Bottoms, MD. Dr. Berry completed his training in 1990 and has been Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal‐Fetal Medicine since 1992. He chose Women’s Health because he thoroughly enjoyed his medical school experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology and fell in love with being able to provide care to women and to reassure their significant others at the same time.

Dr. Berry is not satisfied until his patients understand their diagnosis and treatment plan. He remains open to questions from parents and their families, and for appropriate care plan modifications when requested by his patients. His patients have taught him that all questions can’t be answered by a yes or no, and that the grey areas are important. They have also taught him that the vast majority of women will do anything to have a healthy baby. His most impactful experience within his medical career to‐date was when he delivered the second child of a couple whose first baby died of crib death, and the parents wept with joy in the delivery room.

Dr. Berry has been honored with numerous teaching awards, and the Distinguished Citizen Citation from Macalister College. He is most proud of the care that he has provided to help so many women through high‐risk pregnancies and the fellow, resident and medical student learning he has influenced.

In his free time, Dr. Berry enjoys creative writing, bicycling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
